Randy Travis and his wife, Mary Davis, have a deep love journey.

According to Taste of Country, Travis and Davis had known each other for 30 years before their relationship turned romantic. The couple married on March 21, 2015, in a ceremony led by Pastor Tommy Nelson. Travis was previously married to his manager/wife Elizabeth “Lib” Travis for 19 years. The couple divorced in 2010. Davis was previously married to Dr. Ritchie Beougher, a cosmetic dentist.

In July 2013, Travis suffered a debilitating stroke that left him unable to speak or sing.

“I tell him all the time, ‘You speak volumes in your silence,' ” Davis told PEOPLE in 2019. “In his silence, he can make me feel like a princess. I feel so blessed to get to walk beside him through this.”

Davis continues to assist Travis in daily life. "He's a warrior. He's an angel," she told Taste of Country in 2019. She went on to add that he still tells her how pretty and special she is, things she previously took for granted. “It's one of those things I often tell people, I say 'Listen fast, talk slow.' I wish I'd listened faster to his stories because he has so many great stories."

She’s from Texas

Davis grew up in Plano, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. According to D Magazine, her family moved from Virginia to Plano in 1958 before she was born. “Plano is, from every aspect, a truly phenomenal city,” she told the magazine. “I’ve watched Piano grow for 39 years. You would be hard pressed to find another city that has grown so aggressively while retaining such a superior quality of life.”

According to her Facebook, she studied Business Marketing at Baylor University, and graduated in 1981.

She helped him recover from a stroke

Travis suffered a debilitating stroke in July 2013 that impacted his mobility and speech. Davis was by his side during his recovery on their ranch in Tioga, Texas, where they communicated “our seventh sense, if you would,” Davis told PEOPLE. “Our communication is between hearts now, and not lips.”

She shared more about the stroke’s impact on his health. “The whole third midsection of Randy’s left brain was affected, which is speaking, writing and reading,” she said. “But each day there’s something new that he says or does.”

Travis spent four months in the hospital, and returned home by Thanksgiving in 2013. Davis shared that it “was like somebody left the gate open and boy, we were going to go live life. He didn’t know what the TV remote was or what the telephone was. It takes you back to raising a child, and you start all over again.”

However, he bravely worked on his recovery.

“I don’t think he’s ever seen himself as a victim,” she added.

She stood up to Travis’ doctors

Davis shared with Rolling Stone in 2020 that after his stroke, Travis’ doctors warned her about his long recovery and that he likely would never walk again – and she didn’t accept their thinking.

“When we left the hospital in November 2013, they said, ‘Well, you know, he’s going to be bedridden the rest of his life. And you will be in and out of hospitals the rest of his life. So this is a huge task that you’re taking on.’ I said, ‘I don’t mind that … and I don’t believe it.’"

She went on to explain that although his recovery has “plateaus,” there are “spurts of improvement.”

She helped him accept his Country Music Hall of Fame honor

In March 2016, Travis was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. At that time, he still could not speak, so Davis stepped in to fill in his words.

Davis shared that she had the “daunting task of being the voice of this man who so eloquently put words to melody to make beautiful music.” She added, “I don’t think he understands how important he has been to country music. It’s that humility that’s in Randy that doesn’t allow him to think he made that big of a difference. When fans come over and talk to him and want his autograph, I say, ‘Honey, they love you so much.’ And he’s like, I don’t get it. Maybe now that he’s in the Hall of Fame, he’ll get it.”

She supports Travis at events

Davis is right next to Travis’ side at events, concerts and award shows. Davis most recently attended the induction of singer James Dupre at the Grand Ole Opry with Travis in September 2023, which he shared about on Instagram. She also recently joined him on the red carpet of the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards. Travis had a long road to becoming successful in the country music industry. And Davis understands why his fans love him so much.

"The whole industry was inspired because here was a kid from North Carolina with an interesting past who showed up in Nashville and for 10 years knocked on doors and was turned down," she told PEOPLE.

She explained that it was his voice and music that touched his fans the most.

“The reason people loved Randy Travis is because he left a little piece of himself in every one of his songs,” she added. “Whatever it was you were going through in life, he had a song for you. He made it believable."

They enjoy time together on their ranch

The couple has found refuge on their ranch in Texas.

“We’re fortunate that we’re here on our farm, our ranch here in Texas,” Davis told Rolling Stone. “We have our horses and our cows and we go down and feed them and we talk to them. We have wide open spaces and beautiful sunsets.”

They share a strong faith

After his stroke, their faith helped them stay strong throughout the challenging recovery.

“There’s no way we could have gotten through what we got through without our faith. We were in the hospital almost six months,” she told Rolling Stone.

She went on to add, “ We leaned real hard on God. Every day we still do. It’s like they say, ‘By the grace of God, I walk.’ That’s exactly the way we feel.”

In May 2024, the couple attended the 150th annual Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Travis and Davis posed for photos before watching Mystik Dan win the big race.
